Resilience: The ability to recover quickly from illness, change, or misfortune; buoyancy.
Grit: The perseverance and passion for achieving goals; firmness of mind or spirit; unyielding courage in the face of hardship or danger.
These two words came to mind as Texas, and our industry endured yet another challenge. Over the past two weeks, we fought through ice, storms, snowstorms, power outages, and loss of heat and water. Now, we still have to clean up and repair the aftermath, which will continue to be an ongoing battle. How will we overcome? Like we always have – Resilience and Grit.
After our industry worked through the pandemic last year and rose to that challenge, our teams showed – again –how they embody ‘Resilience.’ Our teams, including our supplier partners, didn’t dwell on the challenges of 2020 or why they have another crisis situation to handle – they got right up, dusted themselves off, and raced back into the fight again—true Resilience.
The incredible courage and determination our teams had truly exemplified their inherited Grit and focus on taking care of our residents. From getting soaking wet in -15 degree weather to lugging dehumidifiers up flights of stairs to carrying out fire watch in the middle of the night while running on fumes, our teams set the bar for taking care of our fellow Texans in need. We know it was a tough and potentially once-in-a-lifetime event, but these are the moments where our teams were built to shine. They were able to show their talents, problem-solving skills, and tenacity. Watching our residents and teams come together to find solutions to extremely difficult problems was truly inspiring—almost fun?!
Most of our team members and their own families were struggling at home as well with no heat or power, but they still showed up with smiles on their faces and incredible positive spirits to play superhero once again. I know I speak for all of us, that we continue to be beyond impressed and couldn’t be more proud of our teams and supplier partners. They swooped in to save the day again and have truly earned their capes. I’m sure everyone is doing this already, so just a reminder to maybe do something special for your supplier partners that saved your tuchus; we had many that saved us, and we are so very grateful.
So, let’s get back to GSD’n team! We are almost there, then it’s back to the calm life of frenzied leasing and completing make-readies in unreasonable amounts of time while getting screamed at by a resident for towing their boyfriend’s sister’s sister’s jalopy with tags from 2019—you know—the good ole days!
