President’s Letter: Destinations Unknown

by Candy Maxey

I’ve never known a time when there was so much uncertainty in the world. So many things we’ve taken for granted are simply gone, put on hold or completely up in the air. Even the small handful of plans we’re making are changing on a regular basis.

I’m thankful for Zoom, Facetime, WhatsApp, and Microsoft Teams. They are marvelous tools, allowing us to move forward in collaborative ways, coordinate schedules, solve problems, and meet deadlines. It’s so much more difficult to navigate through complicated and emotional conversations void of personal interaction. I miss real face time conversations with my friends and colleagues.

In the midst of it all, we’re working hard to think things through at the Apartment Association thoughtfully. Like you, our world is up-side-down. A few of our most essential classes have re-started on a severely limited basis, while others have shifted online. Our maintenance techs are still required to have a pool operator certificate in most of the cities we serve. Many of you continue working to advance your careers with CAM, CAS and CALP, and our other nationally-acclaimed credential programs. Stay tuned – our already rescheduled TAA RedBook seminar is going virtual at the end of this month!

Right now, we’re trying to figure out the incredibly popular AATC-AAGD Business Exchange scheduled in Aug. While a few of NAAs affiliated associations are taking their reverse trade shows virtual, the typical DFW Exchange is multiple times larger; featuring hundreds of OM and PSC members connecting to exchange valuable information. If we’re going do it, we’re determined to do it right, so stay tuned for updates!

Understandably, some people are more than ready to reconnect in person, while many remain steadfast reluctant. We understand and accept both perspectives. Please know we’re taking unprecedented safety precautions to help protect those of you coming into our building. We’ll have details listed for each event on our website, so you know what to expect when you arrive.

We’re working hard to deal with the issues confronting us collectively as well as individually while moving life down the road in a safe and thoughtful manner. We’re continually re-evaluating priorities, realizing things become more alarming as they become more relevant. Today and every day, we’re working harder than ever before to serve you.

Stay safe my friends,

Candy Maxey,
Regional Property Manager, Greystar
President, AATC
